Calculating accurate shipping charges can be a frustrating experience for many Shopify store owners. Shopify is designed with the assumption that you're going to be shipping all of your products from the same location (e.g. your home or office) and that you can easily calculate shipping charges based on the price or weight of your products.
Once you start working with a print-on-demand company like Pixels, both of those assumptions go out the window because:
1. You're no longer shipping products on your own from a single location. In fact, you're not even shipping products from a single location, at all. Pixels has 14 different fulfillment centers located all over the world, and your products will ship from the center that's geographically closest to your buyer.
2. Shopify's weight-based and price-based shipping rules don't work very well when you start shipping large, light-weight items such as 36" x 48" canvas prints.
Don't worry. With a few changes to your Shopify settings, you can make your store display perfectly accurate shipping charges for all of your Pixels products... no matter where they're being shipped in the world!
There are three different ways to calculate shipping charges:
This method is free... but it can be very complex to set up. You have to assign unique weights to all of your Pixels products and then create very specific weight-based rules to target all of those weights.
This method is OK if you're only going to be selling a limited number of Pixels products (e.g. iPhone cases and t-shirts). If you plan on selling more than just a few products and really want to take advantage of everything that our app has to offer, then try to avoid using this method.Learn More
Pixels Calculated Rates
With a few clicks, you can add "Pixels Calculated Rates" to your Shopify store, and then let our app do all of the shipping calculations for you.
When a buyer adds a Pixels product to his/her shopping cart, Shopify will talk directly to our app to determine the shipping charge for all of the Pixels products. Pixels Calculated Rates
We'll do the shipping calculations for you!
This is the easiest, most powerful, and most cost effective way to calculate shipping charges for all of your Pixels products.
The first thing that you need to do is make sure that your Shopify plan has the following feature enabled:
Third-Party Calculated Shipping Rates
According to Shopify's plan pricing page, you have to upgrade to Shopify's Advanced Plan in order to get access to Third-Party Calculated Shipping Rates. Unfortunately, the Advanced plan costs $299 per month. However, if you're currently paying for one of the less expensive plans and are willing to switch from monthly billing to annual billing, Shopify will add Third-Party Calculated Shipping Rates to your less-expensive plan for an additional $20 per month ($240 per year). All you have to do is e-mail Shopify support, let them know that you want to switch to annual billing, and ask them to add Third-Party Calculated Shipping Rates to your store.
Once the new feature has been added to your store, login to your store, and then click on Settings > Shipping.
On the Shipping page, you'll see a section that says Zones and Rates.
Click the button that says Add Shipping Zone. Pick at least one target country for the Shipping Zone (e.g. United States), and then in the section that says Calculated Rates, click on the button that says Add Rate.
You're going to see a screen that looks like this:
Where it says Select a Carrier, choose "Pixels Shipping". Also - make sure that all of the checkboxes are checked, and leave the markups set to zeroes, for now. Click the button that says Done.
This screen shows you that the Pixels app offers two different shipping methods: ground and overnight. If you would like to offer both shipping methods to your buyers when they're checking out on your site, then make sure that both boxes are checked. In the future, we may offer additional shipping methods, as well (e.g. same-day delivery). If you would like to make sure that all future shipping methods get automatically added to your Shopify store, then make sure the third box is checked, as well.
Finally, if you would like to mark up our shipping charges before displaying them to your buyers, you may add a flat fee and/or percentage based markup to your shipping charges. For example, let's say that our app calculates a shipping charge of $25 for a particular order. If your markup is set to 10%, then your store would display that shipping charge to the buyer as $27.50. That's $25 + $2.50.
The buyer would pay you $27.50 for shipping, and we would charge you $25.00 to actually ship the products. This is just a simple way for you to make a little profit on shipping, if desired.
Once you've checked your boxes and adjusted your markup, if desired, click on the button that says Done... and you're done!
You'll now see a screen that looks like this:
For this Shipping Zone, Shopify will now use the Pixels app to calculate shipping charges.
So - what happens now?
Go ahead and add a bunch of Pixels products to your store using our app. We've got 25+ different products to choose from, and you can add hundreds of products to your store in seconds using the app.
Once you're got a few different Pixels products in your store, add some of those products to your shopping cart, and then pretend to checkout on your site just like a buyer would.
You'll see something like this:
The Pixels app is now displaying two shipping options to the buyer: ground and overnight.
That's it! You're ready to start taking orders with perfectly accurate shipping!
Go ahead and change the shipping destination, and the shipping charges will update instantly on the screen. You now have perfectly accurate shipping charges for all Pixels products to any destination in the world. Just make sure that you add the Pixels Calculated Rates to all of your Shipping Zones (i.e. all of the countries that you ship to), and you're good to go.
Is this too good to be true? Are the shipping calculations really perfect?
There is one small catch...
If you sell non-Pixels products through your Shopify store (e.g. bracelets that you make on your own), the Pixels app won't know how to calculate shipping charges for those non-Pixels products. As you probably already know, you can calculate shipping charges for those non-Pixels products using Shopify's built-in weight-based rates or price-based rates. You can also have those shipping charges calculated for you automatically using UPS live rates and/or FedEx live rates.
Unfortunately, those other shipping calculation methods don't know how to calculate shipping charges for Pixels products - that's why you're reading this page, after all.
You've got a little bit of a Catch-22. Pixels can't calculate shipping charges for non-Pixels products, and the other calculation methods can't calculate shipping charges for Pixels products.
So - what do you do if you want to sell both Pixels products and non-Pixels products while still displaying accurate shipping charges to your buyers at checkout?
ANSWER: Read the next section, below.
Advanced Shipping Rules
Calculate accurate shipping charges for Pixels products + non-Pixels products.
The Pixels app enables your Shopify store to accurately calculate shipping charges for all Pixels products using a Shopify featured called Third-Party Calculated Shipping Rates (see Pixels Calculated Rates).
This feature works perfectly if you only sell Pixels products in your store. If you sell Pixels products and non-Pixels products (e.g. bracelets that you make on your own), there's a small problem.
The Pixels app knows how to calculate shipping charges for your Pixels products, but it doesn't know how to calculate shipping charges for non-Pixels products. On the flip side, the other shipping calculation methods that are available through Shopify (e.g. weight-based rules, UPS live rates, etc.) don't know how to calculate shipping charges for Pixels products.
So - what do you do?
Pixels has partnered with another app company called Advanced Shipping Rules to create a perfect solution for you.
First, you'll have to install the Advanced Shipping Rules Shopify app. You can download the app here:
Once you've installed the app, you need to add Advanced Shipping Rules to your Calculated Rates for all of your Shipping Zones.
Next to each Shipping Zone in your Shopify account, click the link that says Edit. Then, in the section that says Calculated Rates, click on the button that says Add Rate.
You're going to see a screen that looks like this:
Where it says Select a Carrier, choose "Vendor Shipping Rules". Also - make sure that all of the checkboxes are checked, and leave the markups set to zeroes, for now. Click the button that says Done.
You'll now see a screen that looks like this:
For the selected Shipping Zone, Shopify will now use the Advanced Shipping Rules app to calculate shipping charges.
So - what happens now?
The next step is to open up the Advanced Shipping Rules app from inside your Shopify store, and then you'll finish setting up all of your shipping rules inside their app.
This may seem like it's getting a little bit complex, but it's not. Here's the big picture of what you're about to accomplish.
1. Shopify is not smart enough on its own to calculate shipping charges for both Pixels products and non-Pixels products. So you're telling Shopify... "Hey, Shopify, don't do my shipping calculations. I want Advanced Shipping Rules to do that for me." For all of your Shipping Zones, you're going to delete all of your weight-based rates, price-based rates, calculated rates, UPS rates, FedEx rates, etc. The only rate that you'll set up in each Shipping Zone is a Calculated Rate for Advanced Shipping Rules.
2. Once you've told Shopify to using Advanced Shipping Rules (and only Advanced Shipping Rules) for all of your Shipping Zones, you then go into the Advanced Shipping Rules app and add all of your rules inside their app. We're not going to give a full tutorial of how to use their app here, but you'll see that it's pretty self explanatory. Here's an overview of what you'll need to do.
First, you'll tell the Advanced Shipping Rules app to use the Pixels app to calculate shipping charges for all Pixels products.
Next, you'll tell the Advances Shipping Rules app how to calculate shipping charges for your non-Pixels products. If you want to use weight-based rates, go for it. If you want to use UPS live rates, that's great, too. The choice is totally up to you.
Let's assume that you tell Advanced Shipping Rules to use the Pixels app for Pixels products and to use UPS for all non-Pixels products. Now, a buyer adds three Pixels products to his shopping cart and two non-Pixels products. At the checkout screen, Shopify is going to send all of the shopping cart information to the Advanced Shipping Rules app. Advanced Shipping Rules will then send three of the products to the Pixel app... get back the shipping charge from Pixels... send the other two products to the UPS app... get back the shipping charge from UPS... and then add the two shipping charges together before showing the total charge to the buyer.
It's a perfect solution.

Using Unique Weights and Weight-Based Rates
This is only recommended if you'll be selling a small selection of Pixels products.
Before you read any further, this section is only going to be useful if you intend to sell a very small selection of Pixels products (e.g. t-shirts and iPhone cases). If you plan on selling for than just one or two products, please do not attempt to follow the instructions in this section. You will be much better off (and much happier in life) if you calculate your shipping charges using Pixels Calculated Rates or Advanced Shipping Rules. Our advice is to start by using Pixels Calculated Rates.
Now that you're been forewarned, let's get technical!
Shopify, by default, is designed to calculate shipping charges in one of two ways:
1. price-based shipping
2. weight-based shipping
If you click on Settings > Shipping in your store, you'll see a section labeled Price Based Rates and another labeled Weight Based Rates. If you click on the button that says Add Rate in each of those sections, you'll see that these shipping calculation methods are pretty self-explanatory and easy to set up.
Let's start by looking at Priced Based Rates. As the name implies, you're going to be charging buyers a shipping charge based on the price of the products in their shopping carts.
To do this, you have to set up rules which translate product prices into shipping charges. Each rule that you set up has to have a rate name, a product price range, and a shipping charge for that price range.
Let's say you set up the following rules:
Rate Name: Shipping A
Range: $0 - $10
Shipping Charge: $5
Rate Name: Shipping B
Range: $10.01 - $100
Shipping Charge: $10
Rate Name: Shipping C
Range: $25 - $75
Shipping Charge: $15
Rate Name: Shipping D
Shipping Charge: $20
If a buyer on your site adds $78 worth products to his shopping cart, the buyer is going to see a single shipping option at checkout:
Shipping B: $10
If the product total is $8.47, the buyer would see:
Shipping A: $5
Now... to throw you a little curveball, if the product total is $50, the buyer is going to see two options:
Shipping B: $10
Shipping C: $15
Why? Because the product price of $50 matches two of your rules. In this scenario, the buyer gets to choose either shipping option.
Most Shopify store owners try to avoid this situation by making sure that their rule price ranges don't overlap.
OK. Hopefully, that's all very simple to understand.
Weight Based Rates work the exact same way - except you set up rules based on the weights of the products instead of their prices. Here are a few examples:
Rate Name: Shipping E
Weights: 0.0 - 1.0 lb.
Shipping Charge: $12
Rate Name: Shipping F
Weights: 1.01 - 5.0 lb.
Shipping Charge: $24
Rate Name: Shipping G
Weights: 2.50 - 3.0 lb.
Shipping Charge: $36
Rate Name: Shipping H
Weights: 5.01+ lb.
Shipping Charge: $48
If the weight of all the items in the buyer's shopping cart is 4 lbs., then the buyer would see:
Shipping F: $24
Once again, any overlap in your rules will cause the buyer to see multiple shipping options at checkout. For example, if the weight of all the items in the shopping cart is 2.75 lbs., then the buyer would see:
Shipping F: $24
Shipping G: $36
If you have rules set up for both price-based shipping and weight-based shipping, then you're going to start to seeing overlap all over the place. Let's assume that you have all eight rules (A - H) set up in your account, and let's assume that a buyer adds $50 worth of products to his shopping cart which weigh, in total, 2.75 lbs. The buyer is going to see:
Shipping B: $10 (match on $50)
Shipping C: $15 (match on $50)
Shipping F: $24 (match on 2.75 lbs.)
Shipping G: $36 (match on 2.75 lbs.)
Even though you might want to charge the buyer $36 for this shopping cart, he's going to see all four options, and there's a very good chance that he's probably going to choose the least expensive one.
Those are the basics of Shopify's price-based shipping and weight-based shipping.
Now - to answer the question that's on your mind:
"How do I make price-based shipping and/or weight-based shipping work for products that are shipping by Pixels?"

In order to translate our shipping charges into rules that Shopify can understand, you have to get creative with your weight-based shipping rules.
Here's the trick. You have to assign unique weights to all of your Pixels products, and then you have to set up weight-based shipping rules that specifically target those unique weights.
The weights that you're going to assign to your Pixels products are going to be totally made up with no basis in reality.
Let's see how this works.
If you look at the table, above, you'll see that our shipping charge for an iPhone case is $5.
For each iPhone case that you add to your store, edit the weight of the iPhone case to be 525.14 pounds. That weight obviously has no basis in reality. An iPhone case is actually going to weigh less than an ounce. That's OK. Set the weight be 525.14 lb. You'll see why.
Now - set up a weight-based shipping rule as follows:
Rate Name: Ground Shipping
Weight Range: 525.14 lb. - 525.14 lb.
Shipping Charge: $5
Here's what it will actually look like in your Shopify store:
As you can see, the weight range for this rule is 525.14 lb. to 525.14 lb. That is - the weight of the items in the shopping cart needs to be exactly 525.14 lb. in order for this rule to apply.
So - if the buyer adds one iPhone case to his shopping cart, the weight is going to be 525.14 lb... this rule will apply... and the buyer will see:
Ground Shipping: $5
Great! That's exactly what you want. You can now go and set up very specific weights for all of your Pixels products and then create weight-based shipping rules for all of those specific weights.
If you scroll back up to our shipping chart, above, you'll see that quite a few different products all have shipping charges of $5 (e.g. iPhone cases, Galaxy cases, t-shirts, etc.) You can set the weights for all of those products to be 525.14 lbs., and then your weight-based rule will charge $5 to ship them all.
If you only intend to sell a few different Pixels products (e.g. t-shirts and iPhone cases), then this method of calculating shipping charges will work quite well for you. However, the Pixels app allows you to sell 25+ different products in a variety of sizes. If you plan on selling more than just one or two of those products, this method of calculating shipping charges using weight-based rates will become very complex and very time consuming very quickly. Due to the sheer number of products that you can sell through the Pixels app, you would end up creating hundreds or thousands of weight-based rules... just for the United States. If you decide to sell internationally, the number of rules that you would have to create would go up even more dramatically.
Also - you have to consider what happens when a buyer adds two phone cases to his shopping cart? Now you have to set up a weight-based rule for 1,050.24 lb. What if the buyer adds two iPhone cases plus a tote bag?
That's not fun to think about... that's not fun to set up... that's not easy to maintain... and as a business owner, that's not a good use of your time.
If you're only going to sell a few our our products, go ahead and give this method a try.
If you really want to take advantage of everything that our app has to offer, then it is highly suggested that you consider calculating shipping charges using Pixels Calculated Rates or Advanced Shipping Rules. Both methods are much easier to setup up and are much more powerful than weight-based rules.
