Nelly Toll Artwork On Display In Hanover

Nelly Toll Artwork On Display In Hanover

Images of paintings created by a hidden child during the Holocaust era will be on display at Art Downtown this April as the Hanover Area Arts Guild presents Imagining a Better World: The Artwork of Nelly Toll.

The exhibit opens April 4 and can be seen during regular gallery hour at Art Downtown, 32 Carlisle St., Hanover. It continues through April 29.

In 1943, a sympathetic Christian family hid Nelly Zygmunt and her mother from the Nazis in Lwow, Poland. In the next year, Nelly created five dozen brightly colored, detailed watercolor dreams of her ideal world. Those creations are in stark contrast to other artwork by Holocaust children, depictions that often are dark and foreboding.

The family that sheltered Nelly and her mother bricked over an outside window opening and placed a decorative rug over the interior. When visitors came to the apartment, the Zygmunts had to stand on the ledge of their secret window to escape detection.

The Color of Happiness

Welcome to our art exhibition entitled “The Color of Happiness”, which runs from March 3rd to April 2nd.

This exhibit features work by two established artists, Rae Chichilnitsky and Robin Halpren-Ruder, who create their art in an attempt to evoke joy and wonderment in viewers. Evoking joy is especially appropriate in the Jewish month of Adar, the month of Purim, a holiday that celebrates the events related in the Book of Esther.

To learn about Purim, check out the story of Esther, which ends happily, pranks and all. To experience the joy of the month of Adar in person, stop by our artists’ opening reception this First Friday, 5 – 9PM! We and our artists will be delighted—overjoyed to meet you!

Photo Of The Day- Goblin Milky Way

Goblin Milky Way (or Racing the Dawn)

My first trip to Goblin Valley was so much fun, and such a success for me, that my wife insisted I return the following weekend... with her. I'm good with that. There were some images I wanted to revisit, and some places I never got to I wanted to explore. So for the second week in a row, I'm up at two AM and headed down the driveway for points south.

My first disappointment when we arrived- the ground frost was not present. That frost added so much to the previous week's shoot, and I was so hoping for that extra. We got to the parking lot, and I was still trying to decide where to start the shoot. I was not going back to the Eyes of the Goblin- I've already done that. During the drive, I decided to try some star shots in the valley if we got there early enough.

I roll out of the car and look up. And there, hanging across the eastern sky, was the Milky Way, just blazing away. Well, that pretty much made up my mind about what...
