M Carlen Watercolor On Exhibit At Carpinteria Arts Center

November 10th, 2019 - Santa Barbara, CA

Michelle Carlen's "After the Storm" watercolor depicting a sailboat appearing to have just passed through a stormy gray blue sea and light gray and peachy sky. This is part of the Carpinteria Art Center's annual small works show which runs November 8 - January 5, 2020. This show encourages smaller works to gear up for holiday shopping. A formal reception will be held for all 59 featured artist on November 16th in the evening.

A Southern California native, I was born and raised in Pasadena, Calif. I developed my passion for art from my paternal Grandmother. As a child and throughout my teen years, I would travel to Whidbey Island, Washington to visit her and my Grandfather. Grandma was a professional watercolorist on the island for many years becoming very active and involved in the local art association and community.

It was through these years that I learned watercolor from her. The memories of us painting together in her studio are truly priceless. While I’ve developed other mediums through classes and instruction, she gave me the tools and guidance that have enabled me to be where I am today.

I've continued through adulthood to purse my practice of painting as watercolors speak to my natural abilities to imitate what I see. I am constantly reminded of the beauty of life, of nature in the outdoors. What inspires me to paint are unique landscapes, scenery, animals and places. I paint the things that seem charming to me, or almost call out to me secretly. And I also paint the things others have this same sense for. My commissioned pieces are always something I take pride in completing as it gives the owner of the work a sense of connection to something greater.

I'm an active member of the Buenaventura Art Association and the San Dieguito Art Guild. You can find my work on exhibit and for sale in shops along the California Coast from San Diego to Pismo Beach. I'm available for commissioned works especially for travel location settings and pet portraiture.

It is my hope you find a piece here that really speaks to your soul. Whether interested in purchasing the original or reproduction on various types of medium of your selection, I hope my art brings you joy for many years to come!
