Artist's Description

This work of art was originally meant as an illustration for a children's book that I was planning to write on Jose Campeche, the famous 18th century Puerto Rican Painter. Jose Campeche was born in San Juan on January 6th, 1752 to Tomás de Rivafrecha y Campeche (1701–1780), a freed slave born in Puerto Rico, and María Jordán y Marqués from the Canary Islands, Spain. He studied with his father, who was also a painter, decorator and dorador. From 1775 to 1778 he studied with Luis Paret, a famous Spanish painter exiled in Puerto Rico. At the time that he lived in Puerto Rico there were not a lot of people living there. The influx of settlers started coming from the mid to late 19th century, and continued even up until the early part of the 20th century.
