Dried-up spring. Abandoned water trough in an area where a spring went dry because of excessive ground water pumping nearby. This area, part of the Great Basin region in the south-western USA, is in the state of Nevada. Seventeen wild horses died here in 2001 when the spring dried up. Nevada ranchers are opposing plans to build a pipeline to pump billions of gallons of water annually to Las Vegas.
