Protozoan spore formation. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Enterocytozoon bieneusi spores (green) in an intestinal cell. As the spores mature, their coiled polar filaments (blue, seen in section here), used in germination, become more prominent. E. bieneusi invades the epithelial cells of the human intestines, usually in immuno-compromised patients. It may cause severe diarrhoea and weight loss. The parasite is thought to be ingested in contaminated food and water. Mature spores are released from the host cell and are expelled from the body in the faeces. Magnification x2800 at 6x7cm size.
