Artist's Description

This was my very first painting, and although it is not particularly good, it is part of the evolution of my artwork and I have thus decided to include it in this collection. Like most people, I was horrified by the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, and turned to art as an expression of my feelings - which I suppose is better than blowing people up in revenge. The first terrorist, Mohamed Atta, had his face flashed across the media as nothing more than a passport photograph. The ghost of Osama Bin Laden; the whole question of religious martyrdom, and the reward of seventy-two virgins for would-be suicide killers became a topic of wide discussion. The fact that Atta and his colleagues had spent so much time in the West was also a source of puzzlement. I tried to include all these disperate elements in the painting, including the symbol of the crescent moon and the Arabic statement that "Islam is peace".
