This painting, and a gallery I have on WEBSHOTS, is dedicated to Ms Lady Day Billie Holiday and to John Coltrane. Billie wrote the great blues classic YOU DONT KNOW WHAT LOVE IS / UNTIL YOU LEARN THE MEANING OF THE BLUES, and she sang it incomparably – as no one else ever could or ever will – and that holds true also for most any song Billie sang.
I think most of the best blues musicians, both singers and instrumentalists, have given “YOU DON’T KNOW”
their best shots, and many of them are very good in their own ways. Variety is one test for a good piece of music. But as with Lady Days vocals, no one has approached such towering intensity and brutal depth of soul with a tenor sax as John Coltrane.
I have been surprised quite happily to find a number of skilled and talented painters posting their interpretations of blues musicians here at FINE ART AMERICA.
