Artist's Description
Euglena sp. protozoan. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Euglena sp. flagellate protozoan. This is a eukaryotic microorganism, being a single cell with a nucleus. It has a flagellum (upper right) that it beats to propel itself through water. It feeds on other microorganisms, and can also photosynthesise (derive energy from sunlight). Euglena sp. protozoa range from 50 to 100 micrometres (millionths of a metre) in length.
