Artist's Description
Malignant meningioma. Light micrograph of a section through a brain tumour. Meningiomas are the most common benign (non-cancerous) intracranial tumor. Malignant (cancerous) meningiomas account for about two to three per cent of all meningiomas. They display histological anaplasia (abnormal lack of differentiation) and increased mitosis (nuclear division) and invade the brain. The 5 year survival rate is below 60 per cent in malignant meningiomas. Magnification: x 150 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
