E. coli induced cell death. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a macrophage white blood cell (centre) that is being destroyed by toxins released by Escherichia coli bacteria (brown). These toxins disrupt the macrophage's cell membrane, resulting in death of the cell.
