Besides the war ammunition 'fireworks' in Vietnam there was actually other occasion for using (Fourth of July type) fireworks. If a soldier's 'in country' tour of duty is up there was a celebration of sorts (if a break in the fighting permits it). Coming in from the 'field' (jungle missions) you are given a 'freedom ride' in a loach (sp?) - A very small helicopter and the pilot would do incredibly acrobatic tricks for you. My first thought was (with my luck) 'I made it through my 'tour of duty' and I'm going to be killed in this stunt'. The painting (you are viewing) is of a scene of soldiers watching fireworks from inside a bunker (you are the one taking the picture looking out) the large curvy looking shaft sticking up above everybody are called 'Short Sticks' and the longer yours is the shorter amount of time you have left in country. They were usually made out of branches/Driftwood etc. And carved by a village 'mama sans' (woman) with snakes, animals or faces on them.
