SARS virus particle, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is an often fatal lung disease that first appeared in China in 2002. The SARS virus is a coronavirus. Coronaviruses are named for their corona (crown) of surface proteins (orange) that are used to attach to and penetrate a host cell. Once inside a cell, the virus particles (virions) use the cell machinery to make more copies of themselves. Magnification x213,000 when printed 10 centimetres high.
