Artist's Description

"Put your faith in the two inches of humus that will build under the trees every thousand years" says Wendell Berry's poem, "The Mad Farmer's Manifesto." This is how good soil is made for growing healthy food and purifying water. If we look closer at the mundane earth, there is a miracle going on beneath our feet. Here, pine needles form a bed for crepe myrtle blossoms and leaves in Birmingham's late summer.

Craig Gallaway

Craig Gallaway has been an artist all his life. He studied art at the University of Texas at Arlington (B.F.A. in painting, 1973); Regent College in Vancouver, B.C. (M.C.S. interdisciplinary studies in art history and theology, 1978); and Emory University (Ph.D. in theology and spiritual formation, 1988). Craig worked in the publishing industry in Nashville, TN (1988 to 1995, where he and his wife, Deborah, also played their original music in the songwriters circuit) and then as professor of art and spiritual formation at Samford University (1995 to 2004). Since 2004 Craig has worked full time as an artist. Craig is primarily a painter, working in watercolor, often on large canvases up to three or more feet in dimension. His work focuses...
