Artist's Description
The seaside ruins of the Aeneas Sardine Products Company in Monterey, California are a reminder that sardine canneries lined its waterfront during the first half of the 20th century. Today, scores of blue-eyed Brandt’s Cormorant birds have claimed the Aeneas remains as a favorite nesting site on Monterey Bay.
John Steinbeck wrote his famous novel “Cannery Row” during the 1940s when the canneries were still in their heyday. In 1953, as a tribute to Steinbeck, Cannery Row became the name of the long seaside street that was parallel to the canneries. Now international tourists know it for its shops, restaurants, upscale waterfront hotels, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
