Artist's Description
Aortic aneurysm. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of an axial section of a patient's pelvic region showing a large aneurysm (yellow/green) of the abdominal aorta. The front of the body is at top. An aneurysm is an abnormal blood-filled dilation in an artery, caused by weakening of the arterial wall. The abdominal aorta supplies the abdominal organs with blood. If the aneurysm is left untreated, the blood vessel could rupture, which is often fatal. Abdominal aortic aneurysm is usually repaired surgically. Risk factors for aneurysm include smoking, high blood pressure, infection and atherosclerosis.
