Artist's Description

The Autograph tree (Clusia rosea) was brought into Hawai'i as an ornamental plant. The Autograph tree gets it's common name (also called the Signature Tree, Scotch Attorney, Pitch Apple, or Balsam Fig) because of the leaves. Each leaf is fairly large, 5 to 8 inches, oval, thick and sturdy. You can scratch the leaf with a sharp object and it will remove the dark green outer layer and reveal a light green inner layer. People write messages, their name, love notes and other types of graffiti into the leaves. The messages stay as long as the leaf is attached to the tree, often months. The autograph tree has showy, drooping, flowers, 3 inches in diameter (7.5 cm) with thick pearly pink petals and yellow stamens. The Clusia blooms during the warmest months.

About James Temple

James Temple

I live in Hawaii, 1200 feet above sea level, on the small rural island of Moloka'i. It is very quiet here, with only about 7,500 residents, sort of like living in a small town in the middle of the Pacific ocean. I appreciate the quiet life after spending 35 years in the advertising/design/illustration business in Chicago and San Francisco. I have always loved cooking. Eventually that love led me to a degree in the Culinary Arts. Since then I have designed and built a house, worked in restaurants, self-published three cookbooks, and took up photography. Now retired, I spend most of my time developing recipes and photographing them, plus researching and writing about Hawaii's culinary history on my food blog at http://tastinghawaii.com....
