Artist's Description

Avian flu. Conceptual computer artwork depicting a giant rooster standing on top of the Earth. Avian flu is a viral disease of poultry. The H5N1 strain of the avian influenza virus first appeared in humans in South-East-Asia in 1997. Between 2003 and 2005 it killed over 60 people. In April 2006 the first case of bird flu was confirmed in the UK. The virus is contracted by close contact with infected birds, although it cannot be contracted by eating meat or eggs. Also, as yet, H5N1 cannot be transferred between humans through the air as human flu viruses can. There are fears that the virus may mutate into a human transmissible form, which could lead to millions of deaths worldwide.

About Victor Habbick Visions

Victor Habbick Visions

Science Photo Library was founded in 1981 by Michael Marten, one of the authors of "Worlds Within Worlds", a book exploring different ways to observe the universe - from electron micrographs, to images of earthrise taken from the Apollo spacecraft. When Marten started receiving requests for the beautiful images in the book, he had an idea of setting up Science Photo Library. Since then, Science Photo Library has continued to work alongside world acclaimed photographers and the leading science and medical experts to provide a central source of the best science and specialist imagery available. Although the collection started with scientific images, it has grown to encompass all aspects of science and their impact on everyday life.
