When Robert was in Haiti last year, he encountered a little girl with her grandfather. She was about three years old and had never seen a white person before. She would take coins from Robert's hand, but she immediately ran to hide behind her grandfather when Rober tried to talk to her. She kept grandfather between her and Robert at all times and kept muttering "mal blanc, mal blanc". Robert finally got someone to translate for him.

I have always been surrounded by art and artists. My father was a popular commercial artist in my hometown of Huntsville, Al. The vast majority of the people my parents socialized with were artists of one sort or another. The artists ranged from technical illustrators to potters to musical instrument makers to cartoonists and animators. I am not sure we ever entertained non artsy types in our home for the entire eighteen years I lived there. I, personally worked first as a technical illustrator and graphic artist, then as a draftsman, mechanical designer, and finally as an industrial engineer, but I never stopped illustrating.
