Small waterfalls babble over mossy granite outcrops, and in the deeper pools beneath, the colorful brook trout dwell. They feed on the many larvae of caddisflies, stoneflies, mayflies, dragonflies, and other water creatures. In turn, the brook trout make great eating for the great blue heron, osprey, and the occasional human. However, I have only caught brook trout in order to save them when they became stranded in one of the last shrinking pools when a drought nearly dried up the creek. My dad, Willoughby Senior (FAA) was a professional artist and writer and I have stepped in his shoes since I was born, though he drew horses better than I did when I was a kid. My family lived in a hand-hewn log cabin we built ourselves in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and had no water or electricity. I love my life with my husband and family in Wyoming among the horses, gophers, deer, antelope, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, and the wild landscape. My work is driven by the land, animals, wild plants and birds I have come to know so well. Hummingbirds still try to get nectar from my upturned fingers.
