Off the main road that runs parallel to the Pyrenees Mountains.. we found a perfect spot for 'le picque-nique'. On a warm winters day, there were no boats as the season doesn't begin until Spring..only a jogger or two and the sounds of birdsong. Tranquility for our lunch, a glass of wine and a little canal-side 'sieste'..
The Canal du Midi is a UNESCO Heritage site. It was master-minded by Mr. Paul Riquet and hand-dug in the 1600's by a large team of hard working men & horses Amazingly, it runs the width of southern France from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea port of Sete. It was designed to 'cut short' the time consuming and dangerous journey around the Iberian peninsula (Spain & Portugal) with it's Pirate Ships & storm dangers during the long voyage.
Today, you too can cruise comfortably down this lovely waterway & not have a worry or a care.. Just relax..& don't forget the wine.
