Theresa, I thank you for your comment!

Lenore, you are right about the time it took to take a photo then, I did not think of that.. Well, I bless my little Canon Ixus, a pocket friendly litle companion I use far to seldom

Thank you Nina! So you have a norsk mormor. Yes, so many people in your country came from Scandinavia, Hard times and no food made it the only chance for survival. And the stories of all the land and gold in America became a magnet for our poor peole.

I so admire your work. Great title too. f/v ;-)

Love the image and the description. Re: smiling in old photos....interesting topic! I think women had it so hard in those days, but practically speaking, it took forever to get the image that I don't think people could hold a smile that long without moving and creating blur. Fascinating topic all around! Instant vote and fave. And the title says much, too!

She looks so much like my Norwegian grandmother! (min Mor Mor :) ) The photo I have of her was taken when she was a teenager and from the late 1800s or very early 1900s She has a collar on her dress just like in your image! Lovely work Gun!

Thanks for the feature in Gothic romance!

Patricia, I think you are right I did not think of that. I wonder how they got their children still aswell.

Sharon, maybe they were so poor they did not have cheese, that's why they emigrated to the country of possibilities.

Wow, the sepia and texturing are superb! They didn't smile because they had to keep perfectly still for the camera shot. I think. Now you've got me wanting to haul out my Finnish great-grandparents' pre-emigration photo to work with. I'm sure it will never be as good as this. Amazing work, Gun!! Vote and Fave!!

Gun Legler replied:

Looking forward to that!

Ahh, they didn't know about "CHEEEEESE"

Thanks Valerie!

Sharon, in my very old family album I cannot see anyone smile at all. I guess going to the photographer was a serious thing in those days. The men equal solemn as the women. Even children are not smiling at all.

Exquisite sweetheART a 5 ***** fave ;~} Valz

This is like an old tintype photo, the first thing I notice is the solemn expression and it made me realize, in times past, women didn' t smile as openly, didn't admit to a joy of life. maybe we now smile at a secret we all share....women rule...

About Gun Legler

Gun Legler

I live in Sweden in a little village near Gothenburg. When I was 40 I left my job as a child psychologist and teacher, and went to art school where I learned graphic art (etchings and such) for four years. Besides that I have worked much with textile collages and watercolor collages. After buying my first computer twenty years ago, I more and more concentrated on digital art. Now the computer takes all my time . I have no education in computer art. I am self-taught. I work in PaintShopPro and sometimes Photoshop. I work mostly from photos, my own and others. Textures are very important for me. I think my love for working with textiles has given birth to that love. With my images I try to evoke an emotional response in the viewer. I try to...
