Artist's Description
Charles Townley (1737-1805), British antiquarian. His name was also spelt Towneley. He travelled extensively in Italy, with his collections of Greek and Roman antiquities now held by the British Museum. The Greek inscription (bottom) translates as: 'By knowing ancient things you will have a clear understanding of the new'. The bust, dating from 1807, is by British sculptor Joseph Nollekens (1737-1823). Artwork from 'Illustrations of the Literary History of the Eighteenth Century', an 8-volume work published between 1817 and 1858 by English printer and antiquarian John Nichols and his son John Bowyer Nichols.
