Artist's Description
Chromic acid battery. Historical illustration of the chromic acid battery designed by French inventor Gustave Trouve (1838-1902). The acidified solution of potassium dichromate was known at the time as potassium bichromate, hence the alternative name of 'bichromate cell'. The metal plates are designed to be lifted out of the acid when the battery is not in use. The first battery was described by Volta in 1800, with chromic acid batteries in use by the 1840s. Other inventors who worked on this battery included Grenet and Poggendorff. Artwork from 'Electricite' (1911) by Max de Nansouty, part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
