Colorized photo from 1908
Original Title: Macy's New York
Location: 108 W 34th St, NY
Welcome to Macy's, the nation's largest department store, huge in 1908, and twice the size today. They took over the entire block. The building still exists, as does the small one on the corner, but currently its covered in huge billboards. Things they removed off the current building: different signs now, balconies and Mercury statue cornices were removed, as were some of the doors.
The colors came from a combination of the current building, and a very detailed postcard. This was photographed on a very sunny day, many people have their parasol's open. What was interesting though were the people. People didn't dress quite like this in this day, many of those people look like they came from a Victorian time machine, dressed up, hour glass figures, arm length gloves, they look like they were placed there for some reason. Since the store was for affordable items, I don't get that.
On the corner you'll see an early sign spinner, advertising a chiropodist, and others. I liked those 3-d wine bottle signs.
