There's something about the white clapboard Methodist church in Oglethorpe that has always reminded me of the little country church my grandparents attended in south Alabama. Maybe it's simply the relatively plain white siding and general shape or maybe it's something else?

Oglethorpe's Methodist congregation is older than the current church, built in 1894. In fact, local legend has it that the traveling Methodist Minister was the one who brought smallpox to Oglethorpe. The city had been one of the largest in Georgia in the mid 19th century, but smallpox decimated the population. It left a town with a small population but a disproportionately rich history and civic pride.Although quite small, it's a classic little southern city in my eyes. And the beautiful old Methodist church is reminiscent of so many old southern churches you find dotting the rural landscape.
