Family: Clusiaceae Genus: Clusia Species: rosea Danger: Parts of plant are poisonous if ingested Handling plant may cause skin irritation or allergic reaction Bloom Colour: Pale Pink Pink White Clusia major is a tree found in the Caribbean, including the Bahamas, Hispaniola, Cuba, and Puerto Rico - such as in Los Haitises National Park. It is a hemiepiphyte plant. The flowers are white. The upper leaf tissue registers 'writing' giving it the common name autograph tree. The tree produces a fleshy, light green but poisonous fruit The tree produces a fleshy, light green but poisonous fruit Once the fruit has split, the seeds are favoured by birds and other wildlife. Clusia major Scientific classification Kingdom: Plantae (unranked): Angiosperms (unranked): Eudicots (unranked): Rosids Order: Malpighiales Family: Clusiaceae Subfamily: Clusioideae Tribe: Clusieae Genus: Clusia Species: C. major Binomial name

The Autograph tree was brought into Hawaii as an ornamental plant. The tree has an apple sized inedible green fruit. As the fruit dries, it opens at one end and disperses tiny red soft seeds. Birds love them. The fruit split open into a hard woody star shape. I find them fascinating . . The Autograph tree gets it's common name (also called the Signature Tree) due to the thick waxy leaves. Each leaf is fairly large, 5 to 8 inches, oval, thick and sturdy. You can scratch the leaf with a sharp object and it will remove the dark green outer layer and reveal a light green inner layer. People write messages, their name, love notes and other types of graffiti into the leaves. The messages stay as long as the leaf is attached to the tree, often months. The leaves have also been used in the past as playing cards. The flowers of the tree are sometimes used in floral arrangements and a sticky sap found in the seeds has been used as a weatherproof caulking. The tree is unfortunately extremely invasive. The seeds are spread by birds and the tree can start just about anywhere. It is not unusual to see a Signature Tree growing out of the middle of another tree. The seeds will sprout and drop long roots. Eventually the tree will kill its host and replace it. It is nearly impossible to eradicate the tree - as there are so many of them planted on the islands as ornamentals, however future planting should be discouraged.

In Florida, however, it is a popular and useful ornamental that has not escaped cultivation. In Sri Lanka it's known as Sinhala Clusia major (synonym: Clusia rosea, the autograph tree, copey, balsam apple, pitch-apple, and Scotch attorney), is a tropical and sub-tropical plant species in the genus Clusia.
