This painting was inspired by the Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), plaguing our farmers. Entire colonies have been disappearing, creating concerns in the farming industry where honey bees are crucial for pollination. The painting is a study of the anatomy of a honey bee. Notes and diagrams sprinkle a canvas that has been sewn together in the honeycomb

Artist Statement I use three consistent techniques in my work. First, is the physical act of tearing apart and rebuilding a canvas. This process has become therapy for my own destructive and controlling personality. Visually, it adds a textural composition to the finished piece and lends itself to the “windows” of writing that I create. (The sewing influence itself is sentimental. The whir of a sewing machine is a familiar and soothing sound, which dates back to when I was a child and my mother held me on her lap while creating her own masterpieces.) The next step is illustration. I compliment soft blocks of color, which blend and bleed into each other with detail on one organic image or subject. In addition, I add sketches with...
