Conjoined twins. Early 20th-century artwork of two conjoined twin sisters: Maria and Rosalina. They are joined in the sternum region, and hence are classified as xiphopagus twins. Born in 1891, near near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, they underwent an exploratory operation in 1899. This operation found that they shared a joined liver. An operation in 1900 by Brazilian surgeon Eduardo Chapot-Prevost (1864-1907) successfully separated the two sisters. However, Maria died of an infection a few days later. Rosalina married and raised a family. Artwork from the 25th volume (first period of 1900) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
