Crystals growing in an aluminium alloy sample. Atom probe tomography (APT) image showing two areas (purple) in a sample of aluminium alloy where new crystals are beginning to grow. Each dot represents an atom. APT is an imaging technique used to visualise the position of each atom in a sample, along with its chemical composition.
