The Island of Korcula, Croatia.
This old man was roaming around the village while we were wandering the streets, taking in the sites and sounds. He called out and we turned around, thinking he was talking to us. We soon realised he was actually calling out to the local stray cats. In his bag he had food for them and this must have been feeding time.
The cats all knew him well and came out from several hiding spots to get their lunch. It soon became apparent that this old man wasn’t in a fit state of mind. His motions were hesitating and he looked lost. After a while he sat down with the cats, looking like he was collecting his thoughts or trying to recall how he ended up here in the first place.
It was sad to witness, but something I wanted to remember.
My work often takes two avenues of theme: a darker, sometimes scary world of unseen nightmares, and a nostalgic playground of warm memories, much safer and happier than the former. I have always looked further than traditional methods of photography. Digital manipulation has allowed me to communicate and share my view of the world. I have a need to lace my work with elements of obscure visions and deliver a piece the viewer can connect with on multiple levels. Andrew Paranavitana is an independent photographic artist.
