Artist's Description
Humpback whales will work together as a pod to create a net of bubbles to concentrate a large school of herring. The whales then simultaneously rise vertically with their enormous mouths wide open into the mass of herring. This image is toward the end of the cycle as the whales close their mouths and sink downward. This feeding technique is know as bubble net feeding and it is amazing to watch. This image is a detail from "Humpback Whales Feeding."
