Hmm...there are bad reasons as well as good. :) Thank you for that thought, Juls! happened for a reason

I still have mixed emotions about the experience...

To answer your inquiry, I am still active in Nikonians, enjoy the monthly challenge, find it helps to keep my old brain thinking creatively!

Wow! Thanks for sharing the background story, it makes the image that much more meaningful.

What an experience for you and your group to witness - It is a Beautiful Image and one that has stayed with me.

The scene was surreal. Bells rang as the priest skewered his blood, just a single tear. This all led to a lengthy discussion with my group, which was an educational tour. At the very least I learned to be careful what I ask for...

The Hindu temple is famous for self-mortification and I asked whether my group would have an opportunity to see it. I was told that for a small fee it was possible. I expected an old man who fancied himself a human pin cushion, not a 12 year old!

Please explain?

Thank you, Susan! Good memory! Are you still active at Nikonians? There is a long story behind this image. It was indeed moving and memorable, in part because as the tour leader I was naively responsible in small part for the ceremony occurring. It was all terribly real and genuine. If only I had known...

Excellent job on this one, must have been a very moving experience. I remember your fine work from Nikonian's online assignment forum miss seeing you there. You have an outstanding collection of works!

It was one of the most dramatic photographic experiences I have had! Thank you, Juls! ~Steve

Wow.....Beautiful and powerful

Artist's Description

A young Hindu has his cheeks pierced during a ceremony at Katargama, southern Sri Lanka. There was no blood...just a single tear appeared after the piercing. The combination of his stoicism with the heat and clanging temple bells made for a surreal experience I will never forget. Tamil Hindus of Sri Lanka and South India refer to the place as Katirkamam. Out of love for Lord Murugan and to mitigate bad karma, bhaktars pierce their cheeks and tongues with vels, pull large chariots carrying murthi of Murugan with large hooks pierced through the skin of their backs. This practice is known as kavadi. B&W version.

About Steve Harrington

Steve Harrington

I am a retired professor at a college in Toronto and taught critical thinking and communications. In the past I also taught literature, creative thinking and problem solving. I've also had the opportunity to teach about and lead tours to a variety of world destinations including backpacking through the Canadian Rockies, traveling above the Arctic Circle in Norway, into the Sahara in Morocco, and throughout Southeast Asia with a special focus on Thailand. It was my four tours to India that formed me most profoundly, both as a person and as a photographer. It is a magic land of extremes in every sense of the word. More recently I had the opportunity to expand my world view with travel to the Peruvian Andes, the back roads of West...
