Artist's Description
Diamond mine security. Early 20th-century artwork of guards at a diamond mine securing padlocked mittens to the hands of workers on a break to prevent them stealing diamonds. This mine is in the Cape Colony, part of the area that is now South Africa. Slavery was abolished in the Cape Colony in 1834, and manual labour was carried out largely by the local population for seasonal wages. Diamond mining prompted large migration, and restrictive laws were passed to control the workforce. This laid the basis for what became apartheid. Artwork from the 25th volume (first period of 1900) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
