Artist's Description

"Lord Lloyd I" Spitfire MKVA Print Wing Cdr. Douglas Bader After losing his legs in an aerobatic crash in 1931, Douglas Bader recovered to become a fighter pilot with the RAF. A highly capable and admirable leader, Douglas Bader worked closely with Air Vice-Marshal Leigh-Mallory and the "Big Wing" strategic concept. Participating in the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain, Douglas Bader would amass 20 aerial victories against the Luftwaffe before being shot down over France. While in captivity, Bader would later become the focus of the "Operation Leg Delivery", a mission coordinated between both the RAF and the Luftwaffe to dispatch new prosthetic legs. General Adolf Galland coordinated efforts to have legs safely dropped by the RAF for Bader in order to make his stay in Germany "more comfortable". Bader and his other allies were liberated in April 1945.
