Paul grew up in the swamps of Florida when he both eagerly explored and dreamed of getting the heck out of there. He showed early promise in art, his work being accepted for touring national shows while he was still in middle school. Upon graduation from high school, he applied for admission to FTU (now UCF) in both art and engineering. He was denied acceptance by the art department as his work was considered "hopelessly rigid".
