ER-2 high-altitude research aircraft. One of NASA's two ER-2 (Earth Resources 2) high-altitude research aircraft seen in clear skies over California's Mojave Desert as it descends for landing at Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California, USA. Two 'superpods' of science monitoring equipment, are fixed to the aircraft's wings. The wingspan is 31.4 metres; length is 19.2 metres. The ER-2, flown since the 1980s, is a modified version of the U-2 spyplane, and can fly at over 27,500 metres altitude for over 8000 kilometres. The ER-2s and the earlier NASA U-2s have flown over 4,500 missions since 1971. Photographed on 14 December 2010.
