Beta Israel Exodus (1979-1985)
In 1973 Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the Sephardi chief rabbi of Israel, decreed that the community of "Beta Israel" is a descendant tribe of Israel. In the absence of full diplomatic relations with Ethiopia, the Israeli Mossad contacted officials in Sudan, which is adjacent to Ethiopia. Thousands from the Beta Israel community traveled by foot to the border with Sudan, and waited there in temporary camps until they were flown to Israel. Between the years 1977 and 1984, these immigrants were led from those camps to Israel by means of vessels of the Israeli Sea Corps and airplanes. Until Operation Moses, about 8,000 made a dangerous journey to Israel during which about 4,000 Beta Israel perished from disease or hunger or were killed by bandits.
This is a signed original work drawn in oil pastel on paper. It was painted from a live model.
Dr. Esther Newman-Cohen is a highly creative Israeli-based artist. She engages in a wide range of artistic activity, including drawing, painting and woodcarving. Her subjects range from abstracts to realistic portraits and landscapes, done in a variety of media - pencil, ink, aquarelle, pastel, acrylic and oil. She also designs ketubot, Jewish marriage contracts, many of which are also posted on Fine Art America. Over the past five years she has added wood sculptures to her repertoire. Her first solo exhibits took place in Jerusalem, at the Alliance Francaise in 1989: "The Women of Jerusalem," in 1992 at the Gerard Behar Theater: "Flowers and Landscapes of Jerusalem," and in 2008 at the Jerusalem Botanical Garden: "Flowers: A Love Story."...
