Artist's Description

Eugenics contest at public fair. Staff and family taking part in the Fitter Families for Future Firesides contest at the Kansas Free Fair, Kansas, USA. This contest, founded in 1920 and later run by the American Eugenics Society (AES), involved offering free medical examinations to find the 'fittest' family according to eugenics criteria. The winning family was awarded the Governor's Trophy. Eugenics is the controversial practice of selectively improving the genetics of human populations. The AES was criticised for their racist assumptions and support of forced sterilizations. This photograph, dating from circa 1925, is part of the AES collections.
