Artist's Description
False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of virions (virus particles) of the measles virus. The specimen has been negatively stained to show the helical symmetry of the nucleocapsid - the nucleic acid core consisting of single- stranded RNA plus the surrounding protein capsid. The nucleocapsid appears as a red filament in the image. In viruses with helical symmetry, the capsid (protein) is wound around the RNA core & surrounded by a lipoprotein envelope (the position of the envelope is not clear in this image). Magnification x25,000 at 35mm size.
