This is a drawing I did from a photo from my family album. The photo was about 2" x3" and was taken approximately 1936. The boy on the left is Frank, the father is Toddy and on the right is Homer. Frank is my father and Homer my uncle. Toddy was my grandfather and I was named after him. I never got to meet Toddy because he died in a collision with a train 1956, just a couple years before I was born.
I heard stories all my life about how hard times were and how they made their living off the land. I suppose some of the stories got exaggerated as the years went by. I mainly remember the stories of how poor they were and I have no doubt they were true. My grandfather worked for the coal mine and also farmed. My father told me they would carry a bucket to the railroad tracks and pick up chunks of coal to put on the wood stove. The coal was used during the cold nights to keep the fire going for warmth. They were taught not to complain and how to work hard.

Todd Spaur, lives in small rural town of Bussey Iowa. graduated Twin Cedars High School in 1980. Graduated with an AA Degree from Des Moines Area Comm. College in 1983. Has Worked in the sign business as a designer and sign painter for most of his carreer. Became disabled from a car accident in 1994. Has worked as a freelance artis since Mainly doing portraits of people from photographs. Main highlights of carreer were the portrait of President Obama, autographed original. Also was featured on the Today Show "American Story, Payback Painter" with Bob Dotson. This was on July 4th 2012, the story focused on a mural painted on a building in his hometown of Bussey, as a thank you to the town for helping him and his family after a horrible...
