Wow, that's crazy how big those roots are! Your photography of these tree roots is exceptional!

Wow, this is a beautiful photograph! I love the complexity of the roots, this must be a very old tree. Wonderful!

Anna Lisa Yoder replied:

Thank you, Amy! This is one of the 5 or so photos that make me happiest! I've actually spoken to a park ranger in Balboa Park who knew a lot about this tree, but I don't recall how old he thought it was... hmm, I'll have to call & ask. If you read my description though, this photo is quite deceiving in a way. The roots are much more humongous than they look. Here's a photo of my relatives in the roots. (I can't make it a link, so you'd have to copy & paste it in a browser):

Love the sculpture quality of the roots. v/f

Artist's Description

Finding this amazing fig tree (Ficus macrophylla) in a Balboa Park ravine (San Diego) was a real thrill-- You can't tell by this photo, but the depth of these roots is perhaps 5 feet or so! The Moreton Bay Fig develops roots that resemble flying buttresses. In fact, the roots are called 'buttress roots". This tree only grows well in tropical climates; Moreton Bay is in a tropical area of Australia.

About Anna Lisa Yoder

Anna Lisa Yoder

I’ve been capturing images that tickle my brain ever since my parents handed me my first camera in 4th grade- a well-loved old Brownie Starflex. My “thing” is lighting—the more natural, the better. Back-lighting and worm’s-eye-views have become near-obsessions. As an art major at Goshen College years ago, the best advice I got there from a favorite professor was to “Play with it!”... sage advice which I still follow today. This may mean lying down in a ditch to see some brown-eyed Susans from below, and there’s the fun. My greatest joy in photography is its way of etching moments in my memory. That singular ray of light or fabulous color which would otherwise get forgotten becomes like an old friend when I process or view the image...
