This velocipede, a sleek, mid-19th century ancestor of the bicycle, known as a "boneshaker" for its rough ride, sits alongside an unseen antique fire truck in an open shed. The name velocipede comes from the Latin for "fast foot" and was coined in 1818 by a Frenchman, Nicephore Niepce in 1818, although it took almost 40 years for the term to enter into the generic vocabulary. This particular velocipede was likely used by the fire company as a messenger vehicle to spread fire alarms and fetch help. It must have taken some time to learn how to balance on one of these in order to be a proficient rider. This sepia photograph was shot in Mystic, Connecticut in August 2009.
This painting has been FEATURED in too many groups to list.

Hello and welcome to my portfolio on Pixels/Fine Art America. One of my major artistic goals, with appropriate images, is to create digital paintings that you wouldn't know were digital unless I told you. If I could paint in oils I would...alas my eyes don't work with my hand, so I create most of my art from photographs that I re-imagine. Few of my digital paintings resemble the original photographs very much when I am finished with my vision. Of course I also create work that is clearly digital as well. Here's a bit about me: RC...
