Fistula and hernia. 18th-century journal page illustrating the case of a fistula and hernia in a woman (Catherine Guillematre), described by the French surgeon Claude Nicholas Le Cat (1700-1768). Observed here after death, the hernia had developed into a fistula, with the intestines passing through the fistula, passing outside the groin, and turning inside out. This external portion of the intestines is seen at lower left. This page is from volume 47 (1751-2) of the journal 'Philosophical Transactions', published by the Royal Society of London. Le Cat was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1740.
