Flexible metamaterial, SEM. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a sheet of flexible metamaterial made by printing alternate thin layers of silver and magnesium fluoride onto substrate. Metamaterials are artificial materials composed of nanoscale structures that exhibit unusual effects on light or sound waves not commonly found in nature. Metamaterials could be used in advanced imaging devices, photonic components and sensors.
