A forest road in Carson National Forest, New Mexico, on the Colorado Plateau, about 20 miles west of Taos, and 20 miles south of the Colorado border. Untouched since the early 1900's when this was sheep-hearding territory. Pinon and sage dominate the landscape. The Sangre de Cristo mountains rise in the distance.

This location is at 7600 foot elevation.

To obtain this image one must have exclusive access to this territory... a rare view of the terrain of the U.S. southwest in a region that is rapidly changing due to climate change. The trees are Piņon ... producing nuts for harvest. The bushes are old cedar trees, stunted due to the elevation. You're looking at a rise in the ground that resulted from violent volcanic and seismic events that produced the Rio Grande Rift, just a few miles to the East of this location.
