striking painting Bruce!.........L

There's a Frida Kahlo in all of us. Good theme.

Yeah, and it looks like a little devil in you! (The pain, anger, and suffering, too?) Thank you for the comments. Peace, etc., Bruce

This is fantastic, Bruce. Surreal and profound...just like Frida

I'm glad that you like it, Sandy. I think that you picked two appropriate words for Frida. Perhaps add "suffering," too. Peace, etc., Bruce

Hi Bruce- I like this painting-and the contrast between the other subjects and Frida-2 different worlds-Frida-quite a dramatic life she had. I saw the movie and was impressed with her words at the end of her life:"I wish to never return". Quite a movie-I remember how cold it was in the theatre that day-I was one of three people watching the movie. By the way we are almost neighbors here in Virginia. All the best... Marlene

Amazing memory, Marlene. Glad you like the painting and mention some of what I tried to do. As for being neighbors, great fireworks here in Williamsbug (some of us say) on the 4th of July! Peace, etc., Bruce

I must say that if you took either element (youself with cats) or Freida you would two wonderful pieces. The combination, from the standpoint of color is disconcerting in that the change is so abrupt. Also, there is a distince difference in stylization between the two images.....but perhaps this is the point. It is a unique creation.......so my hat is off to you.

Say, Jeff, your comment is twice as good as anybody elses! And after cutting it in half, I'd make twice as much money! Thank you, and you can put your hat back on now! Peace, etc., Bruce

How cute...Very interesting peice you have created here...

Thanks a barrel of monkies, Samantha, people used to say years and years ago when I was young! Peace, etc., Bruce

Bruce, you are very funny, and very very good at painting. Too good for any self-deprecation or apologies. If you eliminated Frida (but somehow kept the monkey!), it would be rather finished and quite excellent. I hate to be so publically ignorant, but who is Frida, anyway? I hope, if you do finish her, we'll see the final result. Best, Carole

Hi, Carole, and thanks. Glad you enjoyed the writing; can't stand to go back to in myself. Hope you and the horses and lawering and painting and whatever else you've time and inclination for, all are going well. Peace, etc., Bruce

PS. Carole, I meant to say just Google her. There was a movie some time ago, I heard (after I did what's here), but I haven't seen it.

This is so cool. One of your best, Love it, Happy Valentine

It did give me a chuckle reading your description.....love the cats around your neck!

So, do I! Thanks, Natalie. Looks like you're getting blue! Well, it looks good on you! Peace, etc., Bruce

Artist's Description

I started doing these "twinie" paintings, maybe ten years ago. I had tried portraits for acquaintances, and I was losing friends fast! They felt that my work insulted them, or their children, andor pets, athletes, favorite politicians and other actors. I decided -- not to give up painting -- but never to paint another living thing -- but that even included nature! So I decided just to do self-portraits. Before long, I thought of adding some famous dead people to this short list. Then I thought of pairing my self-portraits with paintings of famous people, especially the self-portraits of famous artists. It came naturally and seemed appropriate to be more-or-less humorous, giving a nod to their styles of dress orand life and painting somewhat with my own self-portrait. I'm still pondering trying Gauguin's "lifestyle!" Peace, etc., Bruce

About Bruce Combs - REACH BEYOND

Bruce Combs - REACH BEYOND

REACH BEYOND, my logo and general theme and goal, usually is the first painting on the left of the top row, or near there. Go ahead and click on it now to open it up for a much better look. And if you're interested, then just go on to more of the paintings. You can always come back and read what I wrote about me. But I seriously hope that these paintings present various facets of my perceptions of our world -- or wishes FOR it -- more vividly -- or at least differently -- than writing can. They mutely show what objects and situations I think merit attention and from what points of view I choose to present them and in what medium and style. I hope that perhaps some, or even a part of one, will touch and vibrate with some part of you,...
