Artist's Description

Mountain worship was a very important part of Inca religion. As well as other indigenous people of the Andes they believed the apus or mountain spirits lived on the high peaks. This small hilltop temple called Inti Punku ("Sun Gate") near Ollantaytambo obviously had ceremonial significance. The peak is Mt. Veronica (or Wakay Willca, "Sacred Tears in Quechua), at 5893m / 19,334ft the highest peak in the Cordillera Urubamba near Cusco, Peru. Photograph James Brunker. Reproduction, transmission or use in any form (print, website, etc) without prior written permission strictly prohibited.
