Popular Western sidekick George 'Gabby' Hayes (1885-1969) appeared in 12 Duke films, this being one of them. The ex-vaudevillian was a shrewd investor who lost his money in the 1929 crash but found refuge in "the new fangled talkin' pictures," as Windy, then Gabby, would say.
Besides Duke, he performed sidekick, comic relief duties for William Boyd (1895-1972), Roy Rogers and Randolph Scott. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
