Gerard Leendertsz Blasius (1627-1682), Dutch anatomist and physician, pointing to an anatomical figure in a book. The inscription (not shown) describes him as a medical doctor and a professor. After qualifying as a doctor, Blasius was appointed in 1659 to teach at the Athenaeum Illustre of Amsterdam, becoming a professor in 1660. He published numerous works, including 'Medicina generalis nova accurataque methodo fundamenta exhibens' (General Medicine, presenting the foundations of a new, precise method, 1661) and 'Observationes medicae anatomicae rariores' (Rare medical and anatomical observations, 1677).
